Passwords after death

When anyone dies, their survivors or family may need to know how the “get in” to their computer or phones. For this they’d need to know your password or PIN.

I’ve been asked “will my TouchID or FaceID still work when I’m dead?” In other words, can a persons dead fingers or face be used to unlock their phone. (The answer is no – the technology checks for that!)

Some people tell people their PINs and passwords to someone else before they die, but many people have no-one they trust this much. Some people leave a note with their Will, but this can hard to change if you change your passwords, and people may not know to look for it.

It’s a bit morbid, but most people have not though about this, but it can be a real problem for people when you die.

There are services that check you’re still alive (for example by sending you a regular email to which you need to respond) and if they decide you are dead, they send an email you have already written to a nominated person or people.
